Animation History Pre-1900

Hi everyone, I just want to continue my post about "Animation History". But this time, I'm going to share about the animation history itself in New Zealand!

1. James Brown
James Brown was once an engraver who resided in Dunedin. But, suddenly he was interested in becoming a cartoonist. His cartoon works never appeared in any New Zealand publications, but he got an appreciation for it in 1850s. Later on, his cartoon was finally published in 1879 with the title "The Old Identities", just 2 years after his death.

3. New Zealand Films
The first person who exhibited motion pictures in New Zealand was Alfred Henry Whitehouse at Auckland (1895). He toured North island and brought his animated films. At first, Whitehouse found it was difficult since there was a lot of critiques from the locals.
The negative view finally changed after British troops fought the Boers in South Africa. That was the first war that involved New Zealand troops and film was the one that brought images back to New Zealand. And finally, Henry filmed the training of the second contingent.
