The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (BSA 106)

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

1. Name of the director and year

Director: Robert Wiene
Year released: 1920
Genre: Horror and psychological

2. German expressionist film techniques

After watching this film, I realized that the german expressionism dominates the whole set, including the place setting, make ups, and dark shadows. The place setting is not so complicated as they only use several different places such as hospital, house, circus arena, and town.
Most of the scene is covered with dark shadows and terror. I really like how to the story twists its ending!

3. Review

In my opinion, this film is quite interesting as there are a lot of unexpected scenes that happened and because I'm a fan of horror and mystery movies. I'm also interested in the story line which is complicated, but has a clear plot. It is not hard as well to identify the characters, since its only focusing on 2 or 3 main characters.
There are also some weaknesses that I found in this movie regarding the dialogues. I think its pretty hard for me to understand what they are talking about, even though there are texts that explained about what is happening. But, after all, this movie is worth it to watch.

4. Recommendations

I will absolutely recommend this film, especially for those who like to watch horror, psychological, and mystery movies. The story is interesting and an unexpected ending!
